Haldwani: Chief Minister’s convoy pelted with stones

Haldwani/Nainital: Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s convoy had to face the wrath of the mob in Haldwani. The chief minister was in the city to meet the grief stricken family of the young girl who was brutally murdered in Haldwani.

Stones pelted at CM’s convoy

The incident took place on Friday afternoon after the Chief Minister had met the grieving family. The angry crowd stopped the CM’s convoy and started shouting antigovernment slogans. The protestors were demanding death penalty for the accused who committed the heinous crime. Suddenly someone hurtled a stone towards the Chief Minister’s vehicle. This seemed to have a domino effect and soon it was raining stones. Soon the situation turned into a warzone. In order to dissipate the crowd the police had to rely on ‘laathicharge’. Several people many of whom were media professionals were injured in the process. The windscreen of CM’s vehicle got broken due to shower of stones thrown at it. Chief Minister Harish Rawat was reported to be unhurt. The incident though shows a major breach in the Chief Minister’s security. Many ABVP workers have been reported to be the ones who were among the miscreants.
Surendra Kumar, spokesperson of the Chief Minister condemned the incident. He further added that strict action must be taken against the agitators which include the son of a former cabinet minister.
Earlier CM Harish Rawat had given orders to take up the case in a fast track court. He also formed a committee led by Additional Secretary Shailesh Bagoli whose function to give a report within 10 days regarding the actions taken by the police in the case.
Meanwhile Haldwani ASP and DSP have come under fire after today’s incident. According to sources, ASP Haldwani Naveen Bhullar and DSP Girish Chandra Tamta have been attached with the Police Headquarters in Dehradun.
