Bangalore-Ernakulam Intecity Express Train Derails

Enhanced Amount of Ex-Gratia of Rs. 2 Lakh to the Next Kin of the Dead Announced

Bengaluru:  In Karnataka, while train No.12677 Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express was on run in section between Anekal Road and Hosur section in Bangalore Division of South Western Railway, its locomotive and ten coaches were derailed at around 7.40 AM today morning near Hosur.  As a result, ten persons lost their lives, ten persons were grievously injured and nine persons suffered simple injuries Some grievously injured passengers have been admitted to nearby Sparsh hospital, Anekal general Hospital and Narayan Hridalaya Hospital. Senior doctors from Railways are monitoring their status and progress by visiting all hospitals.

The Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Chairman, Railway Board,  A.K.Mital, Director General, Railway Health Services, Dr.M.K.Budhalakoti and senior officials from Railway Board rushed to the accident site immediately. Senior railway officials from South Western Railways were also immediately reached at the accident site to ensure speedy rescue and relief operation. Prima-facie cause of the derailment was a boulder on the track.  Suresh Prabhu has expressed his profound grief over the loss of innocent lives. He has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2/- lakh to the next kin of the dead, Rs. 50,000/- each to grievously injured passengers and Rs. 20,000 to those who sustained simple injuries. The Minister of Railways has given instructions to Railway officials to ensure effective and best medical treatment of the injured passengers.

Relief arrangements were quickly initiated and an Accident Relief Medical Van/Bangalore was ordered at 07.45 A.M. and reached at site at 9.08 A.M. The second Accident Relief Medical Van/Erode ordered at 8.00 A.M and reached at the site at 9.20 A.M.

An inquiry has been ordered by Railways under Commissioner Railway Safety, Southern Circle, to ascertain the cause of the accident.
