Canon breaks new ground with the 50.6-megapixel EOS 5D range and the 11–24mm ultra wide-angle zoom lens

New Delhi: Canon today launched the EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS – two flagship EOS cameras equipped with a 50.6-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with dual DIGIC 6 image processors, the highest resolution in Canon’s extensive range of DSLR cameras to date. With Optical Low-Pass Filter cancellation (LPF), the EOS 5DSR captures incredibly detailed and sharp images, alternatively the EOS 5DS reduces the moiré effect using the optical LPF. This dynamic duo is well suited for users who take still landscape and studio photos, as well as commercial images for large-format printing.
With a 50.6-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor, the EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS have by far the highest resolution in Canon’s history of EOS cameras. At this sensor resolution, images that are dramatically trimmed or cropped will still retain optimum quality and details for print.

Both cameras incorporate technologies to enhance image resolution with minimal side-effects. To maintain excellent image quality, the EOS 5DS features a standard optical low-pass filter to resolve any unwanted visual distortion, otherwise known as moiré effect. Additionally, for utmost and uncompromised image quality and resolution, photographers may opt for the EOS 5DSR. The EOS 5DSR delivers on fine details and offers spectacular image performance, thanks to the LPF effect cancellation feature that taps on the full prowess of its 50.6 megapixel sensor.

Fine Detail is a new Picture Style preset designed to maximize the camera’s resolution to capture minute details, which are essential in professions such as architecture, landscape, fashion and commercial photography.

High performance, Unrivalled Shooting Agility and Precision

Powered by the advanced Dual DIGIC 6 image processors, both the Canon EOS 5DSR and Canon EOS 5DS produce a high-speed readout capability and maximum continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second (fps), despite the large image data size that comes with 50.6-megapixel image quality.

The AF system in these cameras is a high-precision 61-point high-density reticular AF on par with that of the EOS 5D Mark III. It responds sensitively to subject distance and adjusts automatically – even with the subtlest changes in composition. With the EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) system, the cameras ensure moving subjects will be actively kept in sharp focus.

Equally nimble, the camera’s AE (automatic exposure) system uses a 150,000-pixel RGB + IR metering sensor that splits the scene into 252 areas. Each of these areas is analysed for the correct exposure settings, taking into account visible and infrared light, thus achieving far more accurate metering.

Enhanced Operability and Ease of use

To meet the varied needs of users, a unique Custom Quick Control feature has been introduced in the Canon EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS. The Custom Quick Control screen is an easily accessible information screen for the user to customize their preferred settings. Settings such as aperture, shutter speed, shooting mode and focus mode can be toggled on and off for the screen to display only the most important information. The layout of the screen can also be customized for users to adjust the size and placement of the items, according to their preferences. Taking advantage of the ultra-high resolution capability of Canon EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS, the new Crop Shooting function offers users the option to crop images for a pseudo telescopic effect when a longer lens is not immediately available. With the 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes enabled, users can still capture a stunningly high 30.5-Megapixels and 19.6-Megapixels image respectively.

Versatility beyond medium format cameras

With the ability to take photos in ultra-high resolution, the Canon EOS 5DSR and Canon EOS 5DS produce images at a quality close to that of medium format cameras, along with several significant advantages. Both cameras are versatile, as their relatively superior AF and continuous shooting ability makes them adept at shooting both moving objects and still landscapes. Additionally, with Canon’s wide range of EF lenses available, users of the EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS will be able to enjoy a wide variety of shooting perspectives. The EOS 5DSR and EOS 5DS are lighter and smaller in build as compared to medium format cameras, hence they provide more convenience and portability when shooting on-the-go. The cameras are also durable, with dust and water resistant qualities, similar to EOS 5D Mark III, especially when used in harsh terrains. With the combination of these added advantages, both cameras provide greater value at its price point and flexibility as compared to medium format cameras.

Canon EF11-24mm wide-angle lens

The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is a wide angle zoom lens starting at 11mm in Canon’s professional L-series range of lenses. Harnessing cutting-edge EF lens technology of high quality components, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM aims to inspire professionals in achieving a new range of photographic expressions.

Seeing the world anew through widest horizons

State-of-the-art EF11-24mm f/4L USM delivers unrivalled image quality and versatility in both wide angle and close-up shots, covering horizontal angle of view at 117° and a diagonal angle of view of 126°.

With a maximum wide-angle of 11mm, the class-leading EF11-24mm f/4L USM covers a horizontal angle of view of 117° and a diagonal angle of view of 126°. Shooting at 11mm also provides a shooting area more than twice that of the 16mm focal length. Hence, where there are space constraints for the photographer, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM can easily capture large subjects such as the façade of buildings or high ceilings.

The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is ideal for time-lapse video recording as it allows the photographer to capture wide visual fields in one shot. In time-lapse video recording mode, superior quality frames captured with the lens will deliver a cinematographic recount of an event.

The EF11-24mm f/4L USM is Canon’s widest angle lens and its broad range provides flexibility for shooting close-up shots while encompassing more of the surroundings. The versatility of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM will be a distinct advantage for photographers, allowing them to explore different photographic compositions with a single lens.

New optical system crafted from precision engineering

The optical system of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM was developed to ensure a consistently high image quality throughout the zoom range. The optical system comprises the assembly of four aspherical lenses, a UD lens, and a super UD lens to create the 11-24mm ultra-wide zoom lens.

The 87mm front element aspherical lens plays a pivotal role in the formation of the durable 11-24mm ultra-wide zoom lens. Besides minimising the reflection, another advantage of the large diameter lens is the reduction of the vignette effect. The new optical design, UD lenses, and super UD lenses, significantly reduce the magnification-type chromatic aberration – a common phenomenon that occurs with ultra-wide angle lenses. For the first time in the history of Canon EF lenses, two lens elements in the EF11-24mm f/4L USM have been specially coated with the Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) technology, minimising ghosting and flaring caused by reflection. In further reducing visible ghosting and flare, the fourth lens in the lens group has an Air Sphere Coating (ASC); an advanced anti-reflection coating constructed by tiny nano particles of trapped air which creates an ultra-low refractive index. Beyond its anti-reflection capabilities, overall optimization of ASC has also led to strong colour balance.

Designed for resilience

L-series lenses are manufactured to be reliable, durable, and able to withstand extreme conditions and rough handling. Having been improved from previous lenses, the EF11-24mm f/4L USM’s zoom function and lens barrel are less susceptible to shock and vibrations.

The entire body of the EF11-24mm f/4L USM is dust and water resistant to protect it from harsh environmental elements. Additionally, both front and rear lenses are glazed with a protective fluorine coating to repel water and oil. Oil that adheres to the lens can be wiped with a dry cloth.
The lens barrel also comes with a built-in petal type hood, which protects the large front lens from the glare of extreme light sources like the sun.

The Canon EOS 5D range of cameras as well as the EF11-24mm lens will be available in stores within the first half of 2015.
