MI outplay CSK in the IPL 2015 finals

Mumbai Indians lift their second IPL title

The IPL 2015 final was a battle between former champs Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. MS Dhoni won the toss and invited the opposition to bat first. Mumbai Indians, got of to a disappointing start as their opening partnership of Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons had been giving them brisk starts failed to deliver in the finals. 1 run for the loss of 1 wicket read the scoreline of the Mumbai Indians after the end of the first over but MI’s never say die attitude kicked in as Rohit Sharma and Lendl Simmons amassed 60 runs in the next 5 overs. The duo recorded a 119 run second wicket stand to lay a strong foundation for their big hitter Kieron Pollard who along with Ambati Raydu scored 36 a piece to take the Mumbai Indians past the 200 run mark.

Setting out to chase 203 was never going to be easy even for a experienced team like CSK who clearly missed the services of maverick opener Brendon McCullum. The MSD led side did try to forge a partnership between Suresh Raina and Dwayne Smith but they could only manage 66 runs between them. Once Raina and Smith were dismissed it was game, set and match for the MI as they kept taking wickets at regular intervals to defeat Chennai by 41 runs.

Mumbai’s victory at Eden Gardens capped one of the most remarkable comebacks in IPL history, with nine wins in their last 11 games after a string of four straight defeats in the opening matches, the Rohit Sharma led team had their work cut out as every match for them was like a knockout.

Interestingly this was the same venue where Mumbai had won their first IPL trophy in 2013 that too against the same opposition. Chennai have now lost four finals (2008, 2012, 2013, 2015) in six appearances.
