What is R-Street?

R-Street is a street event that provides citizens with the opportunity to reclaim their streets, connect with their community, celebrate their city and there/ore reclaim their lives. On the day, one or more streets in the neighborhood, are be cordoned off for citizens for 4-5 hours in the morning to come together in large numbers and use the street for recreation that promotes health, wellbeing, fitness, togetherness and joy. Children and adults are invited to bike, skate, run and walk; to partake in community leisure activities such as street games, street dancing; to learn yoga, aerobics and zumba. The weekly event celebrates the fact that cities are meant for people, not cars. Arrangements are made so that neighborhood residents are not inconvenienced and emergency services are not affected.

Why have R-Street?

The word “R-Street” brings together two ideas. First – R – OUR, which is the possessive form of we, a sense of something that belongs to us and transformation, a journey towards a final goal. And second – Street “This was just an ordinary road full of ordinary people”. R-Street is more than an event. It’s a milestone crafted to galvanize the citizens to participate in a shared vision of an active, car-free lifestyle. In our cities, where car use is on the rise, it is hoped that R-Street will encourage people to ditch their cars, and promote physical activity by influencing residents to get up, get out, and get moving.

What are the Objectives of R-Street?

  • Promote Cycling, Walking and use of Public Transport as envisaged in the National Urban Transport Policy
  • Create awareness around road safety
  • Re-state and remind its citizens that the streets belong to the people
  • Promote Healthy living by encouraging an active lifestyle
  • Promote and facilitate Social Integration and Community Development
