Over 1000 pilgrims stranded on Char Dham route

Heavy rains wash away part of Gangotri Highway

Frequent landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in the hills have blocked Char Dham routes including Rishikesh-Badrinath, Yamnotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath highway at different places, leaving over 1,000 pilgrims stranded.

Pilgrims travelling to Gangotri and Yamnotri were also stranded due to blocked roads. Rishikesh-Gangotri highway (NH 108) was blocked near Bhatukasaun, Lata and Netalamala while Rishikesh-Yamnotri highway (NH 94) remained blocked near Paligad.

Rishikesh -Badrinath highway shut down

The Rishikesh-Badrinath highway (NH 58) was blocked at Maithana, Parthadip and Shetrapal in Chamoli district on Saturday, pilgrims going to Badrinath shrine were also left stranded at different places due to debris on the roads.

According to Sailesh Bagoli, secretary in charge, disaster management department, “Pilgrims staying at Karnprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath were stopped from going ahead and district administration has been directed to arrange food for them. Pilgrims on Gangotri and Yamnotri route are also waiting for roads to open to vehicular traffic.”

“According to some estimates, around 1,000-1,500 pilgrims are waiting at safe locations in Uttarkashi and Chamoli district for the roads to clear,” Bagoli said.

Significantly, Nandprayag-Ghat road in Chamoli district is still blocked due to debris and according to officials, it is expected to open to traffic by Sunday.
