7th suspected dengue death in Doon; over 1,800 test positive across Uttarakhand

Dehradun: A 22-year-old girl from Saharanpur died at a private hospital here on Monday morning due to suspected dengue infection, a claim which the health authorities contested and said that she was suffering from liver ailments

This is the second death in the city on the second day running due to the suspected mosquito-borne disease.

On Sunday, a 50-year-old woman had also succumbed to suspected dengue at CMI hospital here. In her case also, the hospital authorities refused to acknowledge it and blamed it on other complications.

However, in both the cases, the doctors have admitted that the deaths were triggered due to the dengue infection. The preliminary RAPID test of the two women came out to be positive, leading to a sharp dip in the platelets counts and affecting immunity.

So far, at least seven persons have died due to suspected dengue infection in the city this season, but the health authorities have refused to confirm it.

The girl was initially admitted to a private hospital in Saharanpur, from where she was brought to Dehradun three days ago.

Speaking with media, one of her relatives, Praveen Kumar, said: “She was on ventilator for the past two day. This morning she succumbed to the illness. Her RAPID test, conducted in Saharanpur, was positive.”

But, the doctors at the hospital said that the girl was suffering from liver problem and had also lost sight when she was admitted to CMI hospital here.

When asked, chief medical officer (CMO) Dr YS Thapliyal said: “It was an outside case. ELISA testing was not done so we cannot confirm it to be a dengue death.”

Meanwhile, there was not let up in the dengue cases across the hill state.
