More than 12000 Jan Dhan accounts in Uttarakhand under I-T department watch

Over 12,000 Jan Dhan accounts in Uttarakhand, which are suspected to be involved in high-value transactions since demonetisation on November 8, are under the scanner of the Income Tax (I-T) department.

The hill state has 20, 28,355 Jan Dhan accounts in which Rs 937.35 crore has been deposited, according to the central government records till November end.

Sources in Dehradun I-T department said that the district-wise break-up of the accounts is being accessed from the state-owned and private bank branches in the state.

“Numerous transactions, both deposits and withdrawals, have been noticed in these accounts after November 8. I-T teams are scrutinising these transactions. Later, the account holders will be asked to explain the source of the funds and face action,” said the I-T official.

The I-T department suspects that these Jan Dhan accounts were used to launder unaccounted money throughout the month.

The department is also scanning the current account transactions of industrial groups and jewellers having unusually high deposits beginning November 8.
