Mild tremor jolts Dehradun and Uttarkashi

Two slight intensity tremors hit Dehradun and Uttarkashi districts within four hours in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The first tremor with a magnitude of 3.9 occurred at 12:44am. The epicentre was at Rikhnad range village in Chakrata in Dehradun district. Another slight intensity tremor of 3.4 magnitude hit Uttarkashi district and neighbouring areas at around 4:11am.

“The epicentre of both tremors was not very far from each other and centred on the bordering areas of Uttarkashi and Dehradun district. The quake that had hit Chakrata area of Dehradun was slightly higher in intensity than the tremor which hit Uttarkashi,” said Bikram Singh, director, Meteorological Centre.

According to Piyoosh Rautela, executive director of Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre (DMMC), “We have checked with our teams and there were no immediate reports of any property loss. Both tremors were of slight intensity which generally are not destructive in nature.”
