Banned Rs 500 notes worth 9.85 lakh recovered from garbage dump in Rishikesh

Banned currency of Rs 500 notes worth Rs 9.85 lakh were found dumped in a garbage bin near Tapovan tri-junction, near Muni Ki Reti, in Rishikesh on Friday morning.

Almost two months after demonetisation of high-value notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500, a local rag picker in Rishikesh, 46km from state capital Dehradun, came across a sack full of disowned currency notes while segregating garbage.

The rag picker, identified as Uttam Kumar, a Nepali resident, chanced upon the banned currency and had put some Rs 500 notes in his bag. In the meantime, some onlookers spotted him with large amount of old Rs 500 notes and informed the police about it.

“Immediately after receiving information, a police team was sent to the spot. The currency was seized by police and brought to the police station. The seized currency notes are in Rs 500 denomination with a total face value of Rs 9.85lakh,” said Ravi Kumar Saini, in-charge of Muni Ki Reti police station.
