PWD JE nabbed for accepting Rs 50000 bribe

A junior engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD) was arrested by a vigilance department team on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor at his office in Purola in Uttarkashi district.

The accused, Tripen Singh Rana, a resident of Mori in Uttarkashi, had demanded Rs1lakh in bribe from a private contractor named Janak Singh Rawat. Rawat has been seeking clearance of his bill amount of Rs 70 lakh which he had incurred while constructing a road in Uttarkashi.

Giving details, superintendent of police (SP) vigilance, Sadanand Date said, “We received a complaint from the contractor that Rana was demanding a bribe to approve his bills. After investigating his complaint and finding it to be true, we laid a trap and arrested him inside his office in Purola while he was taking a bribe of Rs 50,000.”

Singh had taken a contract for road repair work in Mori block in Uttarkashi. To approve the bills, the junior engineer had to take stock of the work done.

The contractor started the work on January 4, 2017, and had been seeking clearance of his bills. “The contractor also claimed that he was not able to make payments to his labourers and suppliers due to non-clearance of his bills,” said the SP vigilance.
