Heavy rains cause water level at Tehri dam to reach near critical level

Heavy rain may cause Tehri dam reservoir levels to rise to critical state, said dam officials who have written to district magistrates of downstream districts to be prepared for overflowing of Ganga and its tributaries when excess water is released. The warning letter has been issued to district administration of Tehri, Pauri, Dehradun and Haridwar.

This would cause Ganga and its tributaries to overflow and pose danger to those living in low-lying areas on the banks of the river. Therefore, THDC officials have written to officials of four districts as well as the State Disaster Response Force apprising them of the situation and advising them to be prepared for any eventuality.

Additional general manager of Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, U K Thakur, however, said that the SDRF was fully prepared to tackle such a situation. “The SDRF has mapped human dwellings around Ganga and its tributaries and developed an understanding of how an area would be affected due to particular rise in the volume of water,” he said.

Additional district magistrate of Dehradun, Bir Singh Budhiyal, said that the district has taken precautionary measures.“We have identified those living in proximity to the river for safe evacuation. Our paraphernalia – from blowing sirens to evacuating people and rehabilitating them – is also in place,” he said.
