Uttarakhand cabinet gives nod to rename Jollygrant airport

The Uttarakhand cabinet has given its consent to rename Dehradun’s Jollygrant airport after the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In order to change the name of the airport by passing resolution in the coming assembly, it will be sent to the Airports Authority of India, Civil Aviation Authority, Government of India. Dehradun Jollygrant Airport will now be known asĀ  Atal Bihari Vajpayee airport.
In the eighties, industrialist Birla prepared a runway at Jollygrant. This runway played an important role in connecting Dehradun with Air Services. After the formation of the state, there was rapid growth of air services. Regular domestic flights started from here by developing the airport. The number of air passengers increased and the airport was expanded.

Given the demand of air services from Dehradun, now work on developing it as an international airport has started. At the same time, the state cabinet has agreed to name Jollygrant Airport after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday.

People of the state believe in Vajpayee’s contribution in Uttarakhand formation. Local people and BJP workers have decided to make the decision to nominate the government as a welcome move.

Congress government had named it after Adi Guru Shankaracharya

Now the state government will send a new proposal to name the name of Jollygrant Airport in the name of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Central Government. The cabinet decision is expected to be a political flavor, Congress has given its reaction to this. In fact, a proposal of the Congress government’s tenure to name the name of Jollygrant Airport to Guru Shankaracharya is pending with the Center.

The then Congress state government led by Harish Rawat had passed the decision of keeping the name of the Jollygrant Airport named after Guru Shankaracharya shortly before the expiry of its term. The Congress government had argued that there Shankaracharya played a huge role in Uttarakhand becoming Dev Bhoomi. He established Badrinath. In this case, the name of the largest airport in the state should be named after Shankaracharya. After the cabinet approval, a proposal was sent to the Central Government on behalf of the then State Government. No decision has been taken from the center yet. The final decision on the proposal to change the name of the airport is done by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation.
