Becomes 1st Indian women to achieve the feat

Sania Mirza, the poster girl of Indian tennis added another feather to her cap by becoming the world number 1 doubles player. Mirza, who has won multiple Grand Slams became the first Indian women to achieve the feat when she partnered with Martina Hingis who is a former world number 1 herself in the singles category to win the Family Circle Cup in the US.

From 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013, she was ranked by the Women’s Tennis Association as India’s No.1 player, both in singles and doubles. Mirza was named one of the 50 heroes of Asia by Time in October 2005. In March 2010, The Economic Times named Mirza in the list of the “33 women who made India proud”

Sania/Hingis pairing yet to lose a match since Indian Wells

Sania then ended her partnership with Hsieh Su-wei and paired up with Swiss legend Martina Hingis.The pair entered Indian Wells as the top seeds and went on to win the titles in their debut. En Route they beat fancied opponents including former world no. 1s Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-4. Hingis and Mirza didn’t even lose more than four games in any set all fortnight. They went on the clinch theMiami Masters. The Indo-Swiss pair proved to be too good for the team of Dellacqua and Jurak in the finals.
