Heavy rainfall triggers landslides in Nainital

Nainital: Life in the popular toursist hill station Nainital was thrown into to disarray by landslides triggered by some heavy rainfall. The heavy downpour from the heavens caused a huge chunk of mountain to creep into the mall road causing severe flooding.

“Four machines have been working continuously to clear the road. Twelve other machines have been put to dispose of the debris. We had started the work at around 6 a.m. and have been working continuously. We remove debris but find more and more coming down again. That is one problem we are facing,” said Executive Engineer of Public Works Department (PWD), Nainital, S. K. Garg.

Official sources said one person died as a tree uprooted by heavy rain fell over him in Nainital whereas another drowned while attempting to cross a river near Ramnagar in the district.

Traffic along the Mall Road–Birla school route in Nainital was badly affected with heavy rain causing a landslide from which mud and slush flowed down to the Mall hitting more than 10 houses on the way.

Tourism in Nainital has also been hit badly. The city records a footfall in millions, especially during this time of the year. Movement of tourists has been paralyzed as major hangout points are not fit for a visit. Popular tourist attractions in the region also remain inaccessible for several visitors who have converged towards the region in an attempt to experience and explore the hills.
