Making a Difference: Student activist group launch Safai Yatra in Doon

Dehradun: Doon’s own student activist group Making a Difference by Being the Difference (MAD) conducted a city wide Safai Yatra; wherein the group’s 400 odd volunteers gathered first at Astley Hall and then split into teams of nine each and conducted simultaneous clean up drives throughout Dehradun city.

The locations covered included Balbir Road, Nasa Chowk, Nehru Colony D Block, Araghar Chowk, Old Survey Road, Neshvilla Road, Balliwala Chowk, Panditwari Area and Tyagi Road.

It is to be noted that Chief Minister Harish Rawat had himself volunteered to join MAD’s Safai Yatra and reached the Tyagi road dump where he participated in the area’s clean up drive along with 200 odd MAD volunteers; including MAD’s Founding President Abhijay Negi- who introduced him to MAD brigade’s active members. The CM was himself witness to the toxic gasses which emerged out of the Tyagi road dump as MAD’s volunteers cleared the waste mountain standing tall on the roadside. Later a JCB was also called to eliminate the remaining waste. Later a team of young Maddians performed a street play which was greatly appreciated by the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister publically committed to join MAD in each of its weekly Sunday to Sunday clean ups; whenever he would be here.

Ever since the Safai Yatra was announced on Friday; the otherwise inactive Nagar Nigam had launched a city wide clean up drive in a bid to eliminate all dirt from public spaces. Yet the Maddians were able to target those nine spots where they had not cleaned up. When the Chief Minister cleaned up; Mukhya Nagar Sawasthy Adhikari Dr. RK Singh and the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Nitin Badhoria were also present; whereas in most of  MAD’s activities; not many officials actually care. All in all; not just those nine places; the whole city saw substantial cleaning thanks to the Safai Yatra.

As the CM promised to gift Maddians better gloves and masks; MAD volunteers; clad in raincoats in the meanwhile had cleaned up many scattered locations even in the midst of heavy rain by pooling in their own pocket money. Founding President Abhijay Negi, Rajat Panwar, Himalaya Ramola, Jai Sharma, Saumya Rauthan, Saurabh, Shailja, Kashika, Sarthak, Shardul, Akshat among many others were present.
