Accident occured near Shivpuri area of Rishikesh

Rishikesh: At least five persons, including a woman, were killed and 24 others injured, four of them seriously, when a private bus skidded off the road following a collision with a car and fell into a deep gorge in Shivpuri area near Rishikesh on Sunday morning. Four persons died on the spot and another died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Rishikesh. The Garhwal Motor Owners’ Union (GMOU) bus was on its way to Rishikesh from Rudraprayag collided with a car and fell into a khud, near Shivpuri, (Tehri) this afternoon.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Tehri, Mukhtar Mohsin, told TOI, “The bus was coming down towards Rishikesh from Pauri and it met with an accident on Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway with a car carrying Haryana license plates, around the Shivpuri area. The driver lost control over the bus and it fell into a 250-metre deep gorge.”

A rescue and relief operation was initiated by authorities within minutes of receiving information about the accident, and injured persons were rushed to SPS Government Hospital in Rishikesh, Mohsin said, adding that the four seriously injured passengers were referred to the higher centre at Jolly Grant Hospital. The passengers in the car also sustained injuries and were admitted to the hospital, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Rajni Devi, Kadir, Ramesh Negi and Kaptan Singh, while the identity of the fifth victim was yet to be ascertained. According to Tehri Disaster Management Control Room, most of the victims were from the Garhwal region, while one was from Jammu and Kashmir. The mishap occurred at 11:45 am about 20 km from Rishikesh. The bus was a part of Himgiri Express fleet of Garhwal Motor Owners Union Limited (GMOU).
