Gadarpur MLA booked for assault surrenders

Rudrapur: Arvind Pandey, BJP MLA from Gadarpur, was arrested in Rudrapur on Monday after a case was filed against him about an alleged assault on a nayab tehsildar last month. TV news channels flashed images of the flamboyant MLA walking into the police station with a group of supporters, even as some reports claimed he had been arrested from an undisclosed location.

Hearing the matter on September 4, the court had granted the MLA time until September 7 to surrender. The MLA’s lawyer told the court that his client had been unwell.

SSP Nilesh Anand Bharney of Udham Singh Nagar district said, “The MLA was arrested in Rudrapur and sent behind bars.”

Udham Singh Nagar police had got a non-bailable arrest warrant issued against the MLA and nine others after they failed to surrender in the case. In all, 18 people were booked in the case, filed under the SC/ST Act on August 25.
The Uttarakhand high court had earlier dismissed a writ petition filed by the MLA seeking stay on his arrest and quashing of the FIR, saying it is illegal. The tehsildar, in settling a land dispute between two brothers at Chakarpur village in Udham Singh Nagar district, had gone according to evidence offered by documents. The alleged assault occurred after one of the brothers approached the MLA seeking his intervention, complaining that the tehsildar’s decision was unfair.
