Clash of the titans: Flipkart and Amazon take on each other to woo consumers

E-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon are leaving no stone upturned to cash in the lucrative festive season which is round the corner in India. With bragging rights to be called India’s numero uno e-com company both companies have roped in several sellers and have lined up many lucrative deals on their websites and apps which are akin to pandora’s box. While Flipkart announced its return of Big Billion Days sale, Amazon countered it with the Great Indian Festival Sale.

Flipkart Big Billion Days Sale

Homegrown ecommerce giant Flipkart recently announced the “Flpkart Big Billion Days” sale, a sequel of the mega sale it had last year. Unlike last year when the sale was for a day (October 6) and also accessible via the website, which the company claimed had a received billion hits, the sale this time around is spread over five days to celebrate the ensuing festive season. Thus, it is called Big Billion Days. Fashion portal Myntra, in which Flipkart bought majority stake for an estimated Rs. 2,000 crores in May 2014, will also be a part of the special sale with a curated selection.

To avoid a repeat of the last year’s chaotic sale, resulting in its co-founders apologising and admitting to inadequate preparedness, the company has worked to ensure a seamless shopping experience for its 50-million customers.

“We have opened new fulfilment centres across the country to guarantee efficient delivery. We have also ramped our technology and supply chain support to meet the huge customer demand…. We have also roped in our partner banks to give Flipkart customers exclusive offers during ‘Big Billion Days,” Flipkart’s commerce platform head Mukesh Bansal said in the statement.

Amazon’s Great Indian Festival Sale

While Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale will be app-only, most Amazon Great Indian Festive Sale deals will be available to consumers on the Web as well as mobile and apps. However, app customers will get a few privileges under Amazon Great Indian Festive Sale’s ‘pehle App’ philosophy. As per the Amazon Great Indian Festive Sale page, Amazon app users will get “15 minutes early access to top deals” as well as additional cash back on HDFC cards.

Like Flipkart’s Big Billion Days, Amazon is offering its customers a bunch of tips to prepare for its Great Indian Festive Sale. Amazon wants it customers to prep for the sale by downloading the app, singing for an Amazon India account and its newsletters, and have payment and delivery address details saved on the account.
