Youth shoots self at Rajiv chowk metro station

New Delhi: In a major security breach, a 22-year-old man shot himself inside Rajiv Chowk metro station on Thursday night. He is admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital with a bullet injury to his shoulder.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Jitendra Mani said that some passengers revealed that the man boarded the metro from Chandni Chowk station. If these claims by the passengers are found to be true, it could effectively mean that the man sneaked in a pistol inside the metro train. The man has been identified as Shibesh, a native of Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh. Initial probe revealed that he was headed to a private hospital in the city where his father is admitted.

“He suddenly shot himself near gate number three inside Rajiv Chowk metro station around 9.30 p.m. Security personnel rushed him to a hospital,” said Central Industrial Security Force PRO Hemendra Singh. Shibesh Adhikari, who shot himself in the left shoulder, managed to survive, said the police.

Adhikari passed through the security check at gate no. 3 of the metro station at about 9.30 pm, said the police.

Authorities are now trying to ascertain how Adhikari managed to get through the security at the station with the armed weapon.

“There has been a security lapse. We are assessing CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events. We are investigating how he entered the station with a country-made gun. We are also taking the statements of eye-witnesses,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Metro, Jitendra Mani.
