Group posing as Enforcement Directorate officials con Doon businessman of Rs 25 lakh

Dehradun: In a straight out a film story-line, a gang of eight, including two women, introduced themselves as officers of Enforcement Directorate, entered the house of a city businessman on Monday night and allegedly took off with Rs 25 lakh as payment to “prevent any legal action”. The gang members also carried away some jewellery and a two-wheeler parked inside the house before vanishing into the thin air.

Inspector, Kotwali, S S Bisht told TOI, “The entire plan seems to have been inspired by the Hindi movie, wherein a group of people introduce themselves as CBI sleuths to dupe people.”

The group of eight people arrived at the Race Course residence of businessman Yashpal Tandon, who deals in construction work, and introduced themselves at officers of the Enforcement Directorate “who had come on a special raid”. The gang members asked Tandon to produce official documents and threatened legal action against him.

“During the fake raid, some members spoke to Tandon and asked him to pay Rs 50 lakh if he wanted no action against himself,” said the police officer. After “negotiations”, the deal was settled for Rs 25 lakh. Besides, some members also took away the jewellery kept in the house.

“Meanwhile six of them left the house without informing anyone and the remaining two took the two-wheeler on the pretext of finding the other members,” Bisht added.

Sometime later, the businessman realized that he had been duped and informed Kotwali police about the incident. Working on the initial clues, police found the two wheeler abandoned near Kargi chowk. However, there is no trace of the gang.

Following the complaint, a case under section 418 (cheating with knowledge that wrongful loss may ensure to person whose interest offender is bound to protect), 419 (cheating by personation) 420 (cheating), 406 (Criminal breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC has been registered at Kotwali police station against unidentified accused.
