Govt employees in Uttarkashi to walk to office once a week

Uttarkashi: Almost 4,000 government employees have taken up the initiative in Uttarkashi to  start walking or take to cycling to reach their offices once a week. From Thursday, all the government officials, whose residences fall within the periphery of two km of their offices, will walk or bicycle their way to work. District Magistrate Uttarkashi Vinay Shankar Pandey came up with the eco-friendly initiative, which not only aims at checking pollution but also on improving the health of state government employees in the district headquarters and its six tehsils.
The move was hailed by employees and close to 4,000 of them agreed to support it. At present, over 100 government vehicles are being used to ferry the employees. Besides, lower-ranked employees use their personal vehicles. “We have asked all the government employees residing two kilometres from their offices, to either walk or take a bicycle to office each Thursday,” said the DM. Pandey said that it would bring down the expense on state exchequers as petrol and diesel would be saved. “Besides bringing down pollution and improving the health, a walk to the office will definitely help the officers understand their area and people better,” the DM said.
