Badrinath highway blocked after cloudburst in Rudraprayag

Heavy rainfall in Sumerpur in Rudraprayag district on Saturday led to the blocking of the arterial Badrinath Highway, leaving hundreds of vehicles and char dham pilgrims stranded for almost an hour.
Meanwhile, intermittent showers since Friday brought much-needed respite from heat in several areas in the state. Rainfall lashed Mukteshwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Munsyari and Pantnagar in the Kumaon region.

“There is a circulation of easterlies over Uttarakhand due to cyclonic storm ‘ROANU’ which is bringing moisture and causing rainfall in parts of state. Good rainfall was recorded in Kumaon region in the past day and now more rainfall will occur on May 23 and 24 in many places in Uttarakhand,” said Bikram Singh, director, Meteorological Centre.
The maximum and minimum temperatures dropped across the state owing to the spell of rain. In Dehradun, the maximum temperature was recorded at 37.1 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, while the minimum remained at 24.4 degrees Celsius. In Pantnagar, the temperature has fallen three degrees below normal with maximum temperature settling at 34 degrees Celsius.
