Commuters left stranded as 4000 outsorced roadways staff go on strike

Normal life was affected as employees of the Transport Department went on an indefinite strike yesterday. Government buses remained off road in both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions.
More than 4,000 employees are protesting in support of their pending demands. The protesters, including bus drivers and conductors, under the aegis of the Uttarakhand Roadways Karamchari Union, gathered at the ISBT and protested against the Congress-led state government. They raised slogans against the government and in favour of their demands.
The agitated outsourced employees, including bus drivers, conductors, workshop technicians etc. demanded that they should be hired as contractual employees. They wanted better pay and perks.
Meanwhile, the strike by roadways employees hit commuters the most. The state transport buses did not ply leaving commuters dependent on cab operators or their own vehicles. The worst affected areas were Garhwal and Kumaon divisions as people had to opt for private buses and Max vehicles to reach their destinations.
Addressing protesters, Ashok Chowdhury, secretary, Uttarakhand Roadways Karamchari Union, said talks with the Transport Department Managing Director, BK Sant, remained inconclusive. He lamented that memorandums about their demands were submitted to the management, but to no avail.
Chowdhury said the management had given them a false assurance that their demands would be fulfilled soon. He said they had decided to call off their agitation only when their demands, which had been pending for a year now, were fulfilled.
The protesters said the state government should accede to their demands as these were “genuine”.
