Nainital’s 175th foundation day celebrated with fervor

Residents of Nainital celebrated the 175th foThe annual celebrations were started only 12 years ago when people of the lake city decided to observe November 18, the day on which an English merchant P Baron arrived at the banks of the Naini lake and decided to settle there in 1841, as Nainital’s foundation day.

Deepak Rawat, district magistrate of Nainital, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said, “The town is rich in heritage and is part of memories of people across the world.” This year, the celebrations were held at the Government Girls Inter College. A havan was followed by cake-cutting and then a session by historian Ajay Singh Rawat on the brief history of the town.

Rawat said, “It won’t be correct to say that Nainital was founded by the English. We can find the mention of the place as Saptrishi Sarovar in our religious scriptures. Even before the English decided to settle here, Nainital was considered a holy place and people had settled down here.”

The city of lakes is known for the scenic Naini lake. In the 1800s, the British introduced yacht sailing as sports here.undation day of the hill town on Friday.
