Uttarakahnd State Table Tennis Championship in Haridwar from today

The 16th Hemlata Kohli Memorial STAG Uttarakahnd State Table Tennis Championship will be organised in Haridwar district for the first time from November 4 to 6. Table tennis aficionados will get a chance to see state-level players vying for individual and team championship titles.

The coveted championship, supported by the Uttarakhand Table Tennis Association, will be held at the STAG Table Tennis Academy, Whizzkid School, Industrial Area, Haridwar. Teams from all seven districts of Garhwal and six districts of Kumaon will participate.

Lokesh Ohri, manager of Whizzkid School, said this was for the first time that a state-level table tennis championship was being organised in Haridwar. He praised Whizzkid School principal Neelakshi Raj for developing the sporting infrastructure and the table tennis academy on the school premises. He said the tournament would promote table tennis among youths and also present Haridwar as an ideal sporting city.

“More than 110 players from across the state have registered themselves for the championship. Top players such as Akash Gupta, Tina Rawat, Sunita Semwal and Vanshikha Saxena will be vying for the top slot. It will be an ideal platform for the budding players to hone their sporting skills as well as see top state players play under one roof,” said Ohri.

Neelakshi Raj said they had opened the table tennis academy on the school premises with the support of STAG, table tennis sporting accessories brand, in July. Budding players are trained at the academy.

“Our academy has an international standard playing arena, equipment and accessories similar to any other national-level tennis centre. We hope in the coming years, Haridwar will produce top state and national level players and will host more such tournaments,” she said.

Academy coach Ghan Shyam Rai said national-level referees and match officials would supervise the matches.
