Dehradun Clock Tower renovation work to start after 10 years of delay

Almost 10 years and several project reports later, the iconic Clock Tower( the unique hexagonal structure popularly known as Ghantaghar among locals) in Dehradun is finally set to get a makeover. Over the last decade, a number of proposals have been submitted and hefty amounts have been sanctioned for strengthening and beautification of the landmark but not much work has taken place on the ground.

On Sunday, work was started after mayor Vinod Chamoli announced that an additional Rs 76 lakh would be spent on improving the area around the tower. Last year, too, he had approved Rs 50 lakh from the nigam’s funds for renovation of the tower. “We have been trying to renovate the tower but couldn’t decide on a suitable proposal since the foundation of the structure needs strengthening, which is what is going to be done now. It is not just a cosmetic renovation,” he said.
“There have been discussions on renovating of the tower and work has been started. BRIDCUL would be essentially strengthening the core of the Clock Tower and would also be creating a chemical wall around its foundation to protect it from rodents and insects. They will complete this work in four months while we will be working on the area surrounding the tower,” said Vijay Kumar Jogdande, commissioner, Dehradun nagar nigam.
