Triple Talaq bill passed in Lok Sabha

In a landmark decision, the Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Triple Talaq bill just a day after discussion making Triple Talaq a criminal offense.

On one hand, while women are very happy with the passing of triple talaq bill in the House, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has demanded to withdraw it while protesting against it. The opposition is also not in support of the bill.

The Narendra Modi government of the center introduced the Bill today in the Lok Sabha for the prevention of Divorce-A-Vedat, ie the practice of giving divorce on three occasions. The provision of punishment for triple talaq has been kept at upto three years in prision.

The bill, prepared by an inter-ministerial group headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, makes instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat in any form — spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp — “illegal and void”.

The bill will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
