US pulls out of United Nation’s global refugee agreement

The United States has now announced the separation from the United Nations (UN) Global Refugee Agreement. The US says that many of the provisions of this agreement during Obama’s tenure are against immigration and refugee policies of America and immigration principles of the Trump administration. Significantly, the Trump Administration has separated from many global commitments including the UNESCO and Paris climate agreement.

The US Embassy in the UN said that President Donald Trump is determined to be separated from the agreement process. Earlier, the UN Secretary-General was informed of this decision of the United States. In 2016, after the Obama administration’s decision to join the UN’s New York Declaration on Refugees, America joined the process of agreement.

US Ambassador to the UN Nicky Haley said that America is proud of its immigrant heritage and long-standing ethical leadership on helping the refugees worldwide. In this case, no other country has done more than the US. America’s generosity will remain. But our decisions on immigrant policies should be done only by the Americans. We will decide how well the border will be controlled and who will be allowed to enter our country. She said that the global view in the New York Declaration is not favorable to American sovereignty.
