India to preside over UNSC in August 2021

India, was elected unopposed as a temporary member of the UN Security Council, will preside over this influential body in August next year. India will also get a chance to preside over the Security Council for one month in the year 2022. India was elected as a temporary member of this 15-member organization for two years on Wednesday.

All the members of the Security Council are given the responsibility of chairmanship for one month in turn on the basis of English alphabet. According to a statement issued by the UN spokesperson’s office, India will take over the chairmanship of the council in August next year. India will get this responsibility in the year 2022 also for one month. India, Norway, Ireland, Mexico and Kenya were elected as provisional members of the Security Council on Wednesday. Their term will start from January 1, 2021.

Out of the 192 member countries of the United Nations, 184 members voted in favor of India. India was the only candidate for provisional member from the Asia Pacific region. Therefore, there was no doubt about its victory. India has been a temporary member of the Security Council seven times before.

Indian envoy expresses happiness

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Trimurti, expressed happiness that India has received overwhelming support in the election for a temporary member of the Security Council. Trimurti said that our election to the Security Council in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic inspires Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and global leadership. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar tweeted while congratulating India on this victory – Congratulations to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations and the Ministry of External Affairs for good work.
