23 feet wide Moon replica to be placed at Gateway of India this weekend

The Gateway of India at Mumbai sported a celestial look over the weekend. The replica of a giant 23-feet-wide moon was unveiled at Gateway on Saturday for public viewing to mark 70 years of the British Council in India. The replica, using imagery from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera and created with the UK Space Agency, is currently on a tour of India. The artwork suspended mid-air in front of the landmark was in Mumbai during a two-day stopover on Saturday and Sunday. It is a miniature replica of the moon of which one cm represents five km of the lunar surface. Known as the Museum of the Moon, it has been created by British artist Luke Jerram.The impeccable replica of the moon is called the ‘Museum of Moon’ and it will be touring India at various locations across the country to mark the final phase of the British Council’s UK-India Year of Culture. Although the replica looks quite big, in reality, it is almost half a million times smaller than our moon, the closest cosmic neighbor.

The moon replica which was launched in 2016 has travelled to France, Italy, the United States, Hong Kong and Dubai. It has been in both indoor and outdoor spaces. It intends to give humans a feeling of the moon before the golden jubilee of the historic moon landing accomplished by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin.
