Restrictions imposed after water levels drop in Naini lake

The falling water level of Naini Lake is now becoming a cause of concern for the administration and the residents in Nainital. Given the shortage of water, Nainital’s drinking water supply has been cut for the first time. Instead of 13-14 MLD daily, eight MLD water is being given. Little or no rainfall coupled with drying up water sources recharging the lake has resulted in water levels going down.

Water Institute records show that in the year 2011, 13 MLD water was supplied to Nainital in February. From the year 2014 to 2017, this figure of supply has increased to 14 MLD, but the water in the lake is continuously decreasing. Sunil Tiwari, the Executive Engineer of Water Institute, told that the city of Nainital is being supplied in three hours morning and three hours in the evening in the month of January this year. Eight MLD water is being supplied throughout the day.
