PM Modi speaks up on Uri Attacks, says nation feeling sentiment akin to 1965

Army does not speak, it shows its prowess: PM Modi on Uri Attacks

Addressing the people through his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, the Prime Minister said: “The country is proud of its Army. Citizens and politicians get many opportunities to speak, and do speak. The Army does not speak, the Army demonstrates its prowess.”

He recalled that “during the 1965 war, when Lal Bahadur Shastri was leading the nation, there was a similar sentiment, anger and patriotic fervour. Everyone felt that something must be done, and everyone had the desire to do something”. Modi also reached out to the people of Kashmir who, he said, have begun to “understand anti-national forces and have started distancing themselves from such elements to walk the path of peace” because “reality is dawning on them”.

Earlier on Saturday Modi squarely targetted Pakistan, saying India will not forget the “sacrifices of 18 soldiers” killed in the Uri attack and will work to isolate Pakistan globally for exporting terror. Addressing the BJP conclave in Kozhikode on Saturday, the Prime Minister had nuanced his attack on Pakistan with strategic restraint, challenging it to go to war instead against poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and infant mortality. On Sunday, taking the argument of restraint further, Modi referred to a letter written to him by 11-year-old Harshvardhan who gave expression to his anger over the Uri attack by pledging to study an extra three hours everyday to become a good citizen.
