200 engineering colleges to be shut down this year

There was a time when the number of students studying engineering was quite high. Now, according to the latest data, the number of students taking admission in engineering has come down drastically. The reason for the shortage is being expressed as interest of students, which is gradually ending. Because of this, the decision to close 200 engineering colleges is being taken.

According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), about 200 engineering colleges have applied for closure. After that these second-tier engineering colleges can no longer afford admission to any student. Currently, the names of these 200 colleges have not been officially announced.

Old students will continue their studies

AICTE’s chairperson Anil Sahastrabuddhi told the Time Group, “Closure of these colleges will not happen till the Graduation of existing batch of students is not complete.” From this year onwards, these colleges can not admit any new students. It is clear that as soon as the current course of these colleges will be completed then all these engineering colleges will be closed.

Seat decline in Engineering Colleges

According to the Times Group, after the closure of 200 colleges, engineering seats will also fall. Around 80,000 seats may fall this year. According to one estimate about 3.1 lakh seats will be reduced in engineering colleges within four years, including 2018-19.
From 2012-2013, the number of students taking admission in engineering has decreased by 1.86 lakh. After that, it was found from the year 2016 that the number of students taking admission in engineering every year is constantly decreasing. According to AICTE, about 75,000 students are getting reduced every year. Students who are seeking admission in undergraduate engineering courses are on the decline. In 2016-17, the ability to take admission in undergraduate was 15,71,220 and only 7,87,127 students took admission. After that 50 percent decline in admission was found. In 2015-2016 16,47,155 students could have taken but only 8,60,357 students took admission. Where 53 percent decline in admission was found.
