Common Wealth Games 2018: Gururaja opens India’s account with silver in weightlifting

India has opened its medal tally account in the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Weightlifter Gururaja has won the first medal. Gururaja won a silver medal with a total of 249 kg and gave the country the first medal. Ahmed Mahmood of Malaysia won Gold MedalĀ  while Sri Lanka’s Chaturanga Lakmal won the Bronze.

First win with badminton event

In the Commonwealth Games, India started with a win at Badminton team event. In the first match, India’s Pranav Chopra and Ritwika outclassed the Sri Lankan pair. In addition, India’s Srikanth registered a second win in the men’s singles match. Indian women’s hockey team lost their first match.

Expections from Meerabai Chanu on Day 1

Today the eyes of the whole nation are based on the female weightlifter Meerabai Chanu. She is considered to be the strongest contender for the gold medal. In the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Chanu won the silver medal for the country in 48 kg category.

In India, there are more than 200 athletes taking part in the common wealth games 2018 that will last 11 days in Australia’s Gold Coast. In the year 2014, India had won 64 medals in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. This time the challenge is to bring more medals than that.
