Maldives rejoins The Commonwealth after 3 year gap

The Maldives was officially reintegrated into the Commonwealth on Saturday. Maldives separated from the Commonwealth on the issue of human rights about three years ago. Maldives has rejoined the Commonwealth at a time when Britain broke away from the European Union after being a member for 47 years.

The Maldives seceded from the Commonwealth after being warned of suspension over its human rights record and lack of progress on democratic reform. Maldives requested to rejoin the Commonwealth in December 2018 when its President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih wrote a letter to Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.
