Navjot Singh Sidhu in troubled waters over 30 year old road rage case

The Punjab government told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that it was the right decision to blame state minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for road rage by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The lawyer present on behalf of the Punjab government said before the bench of Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul that Gurnam Singh of Patiala was killed after being punched in the head.

The government said that it was wrong to conclude that the death of Singh was not due to brain hemorrhage but due to heart stoppage. The Punjab Government’s advocate said, “There is no evidence that death is due to heart attack or brain hemorrhage. The judgment of the lower court was abolished by the High Court. The accused A1 (Navjot Singh Sidhu) had punched Gurnam Singh which caused brain hemorrhage and he died. ”

During the hearing in the Supreme Court on the petition of former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, the complainant had said that a case of murder and not a case of negligence against Siddhu should be registered. Sidhu knew what he was doing, what he had done consciously, therefore he should be prosecuted for murder.

The complainant said that if it was a case of roadrage then he would hit and run, but Sidhu first removed him from the car and punched the victim and also took the car keys with him.
The former Punjab cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was convicted by the Punjab-Haryana High Court for his non-intentional murder and sentenced to three years in jail. Against this, he had filed a petition in the Supreme Court and the court overturned the lower court’s decision. Earlier, the trial court had acquitted Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu.

On December 27, 1988 Sidhu reached the market of Sheravale gate of Patiala with his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu. They got into a fight with Gurnam Singh over car parking issue outside state bank of India. One thing led to another in the heated argument and Sidhu punched Gurnam Singh in the head resulting in his death.
