9 protesters killed in police action in Tuticorin

Tamil Nadu CM K. Palaniswami said today that nine demonstrators were killed in “police action” against people protesting against the Vedanta group’s unit Sterlite Industries India Limited in Tuticorin. Along with this he announced the judicial inquiry of the incident.

He said that protesters were protesting against the injunction in the area and taking out procession towards collectorate. In a statement, the Chief Minister said that the protesters not only pelted stones on the police, but also set fire to vehicles on vehicles in collectorate.

Palaniswami has home ministry too.

He said, “Police had to take action in the inevitable circumstances to protect the lives of people because the demonstrators were repeatedly doing violence … the police had to stop the violence. ”

The Chief Minister said, “I am sorry to know that in this incident, nine persons were killed unfortunately. “He expressed sympathy towards the families of the dead. Palaniswami said that he announced the formation of a single-member commission under the retired judge of the High Court which will investigate the incident.

The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the incident, Rs 3 lakh to the seriously injured and compensation of Rs one lakh to the injured.

He also gave the hope of giving government jobs to the people of the people who lost their life in the event of merit. The Chief Minister directed the district administration of Tuticorin to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
Nearly five thousand people, who are demanding closure of the Vedanta group-owned plant for pollution related issues, have clashed with the police and set fire to vehicles and public property.
