Yeddyurappa resigns before facing floor test

BS Yeddyurappa has resigned even before the much awaited floor test to prove his party strength. This time he was only the Chief Minister of Karnataka for two and a half days. Addressing the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, he said, “I will come back, I will win more than 150 seats.” After this he said that the BJP does not have a majority and he is going to hand over his resignation to the governor.

In his speech, Yeddyurappa thanked PM Modi for perhaps the first time a PM chose a CM Candidate. Also Yeddyurappa thanked party President Amit Shah.

BJP does not get majority in Karnataka

Elections had been held for 222 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The majority needed 112 seats. 104 BJP MLAs have come out victorious. 37 MLAs from JDS and MLAs of 78 Congress and three other parties have won. For Yeddyurappa to prove majority, eight additional legislators were required. The party was not able to mobilize the required strength and then Yeddyurappa resigned from the post of CM.

Successful Congress-JDS Strategy

It was a big challenge for the BJP to get the magical figure of 112 MLAs in the House. Congress-JDS had guarded all of its MLAs and the Supreme Court had eyes on the whole issue. Earlier, Yeddyurappa resigned from the post of CM in 2007 to prove his majority after 7 days of taking oath. After this, he presented it on the martyrdom period. As a result, the BJP came back to power with 110 seats when elections were held after one year.
