Dr Indira Hridayesh elected leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand

Senior Uttarakhand Congress leader and Haldwani MLA Indira Hridayesh has been elected Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. By virtue of her new position, she will be the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. She was unanimously elected at a meeting of the Congress MLAs in Dehradun yesterday. The Congress has 11 MLAs in the state.

Congress MLA from Ranikhet Karan Mehra has been elected Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Bhagwanpur MLA Mamta Rakesh has been made chief whip for the Congress.

The announcements for the three posts were made by Congress Uttarakhand in-charge Ambika Soni in presence of Shailja Kumari, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat and state Congress president Kishore Upadhyay.

Shortly after her election, Hridayesh said she would take up the “anti-people policies” of the state government both outside and in the Assembly. She said taking up the people’s issues would be her top priority.

Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat congratulated her and extended his best wishes to her. State Congress president Kishore Upadhyay said the party would be immensely benefited due to the elevation of Indira Hridayesh.
