In a shocking upset defending champions were knocked out of FIFA World Cup 2018 after losing 2-0 to Korea in the group stages. Both goals came in the extra time with Kim Young-Gwon (90’+2 minutes) and Son Heung-Min (90’+6 minutes) scoring for Korea Republic. FIFA World Cup 2018: Germany create this dubious record after 80 years
The four-time winners, who had not been eliminated in a World Cup first round since 1938, were a shadow of their once dominant selves, managing only two goals in their three group games.
In the first half, Korea showed excellent defense and did not allow Germany to score a single goal. German strikers constantly attacked Korea but could not convert into goals. Germany’s tournament got off to a bad start in the beginning and it was startled by Mexico 1-0. After this the team won its encounter against Sweden. South Korean team was already out of the knockout stages after losing the first two matches.
Curse of winning the World Cup?
This is the fourth instance in the last five World Cups when the defending champion team crashed out of the tournament in the first round. Earlier in 2002 France, Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014 had suffered such despair. This was the first World Cup match after the 0-1 defeat against Spain in the 2010 semi-final, in which Germany did not give Thomas Müller a place in the starting XI.
