Uniform Civil Code (UCC) draft ready; to be submitted to Uttarakhand government soon

On Friday, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, former judge of the Supreme Court who id the head of the five-member expert committee, told media: “It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that the drafting of the proposed Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand is now complete. The report of the expert committee along with the draft will be printed and submitted to the Government of Uttarakhand.”

The outline of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) being brought by the Uttarakhand government has been prepared. As per media reports, under this UCC draft, a recommendation has been made to increase the age of marriage for girls from 18 to 21 years. Apart from this, a provision has been made to make marriage registration compulsory in the state. On the other hand, couples living in live-in relationship will not be able to do so without informing the family. Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (retired), who prepared the draft for Uttarakhand, said that the draft has been prepared and will soon be handed over to the state government.
