Day of upsets and shockers at Australian Open 2020

Day 5 of the Australian Open 2020 proved to be a historic and eventful day.

America’s 15-year-old young teenage tennis sensation Coco Gauff on Friday made another major upset at the first Australian Open Grand Slam of the year. She defeated the defending champion Naomi Osaka of Japan in the third round. World No. 67 Gauff defeated World No. 4 Osaka 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. The match played at Rod Laver Arena lasted one hour and seven minutes.

Gough made her big debut in the tournament by defeating Venus Williams in the first round. Now in the fourth round, Gauff will face the winner of the match between Shui Zhang of China and Sofia Kenin of America.

Wozniacki ends career at Australian Open

At the same time, former World No.1 Carolina Wozniacki was defeated by Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the third round of the tournament. Wozniacki, who won the Australian Open title in 2018, lost 5-7, 6-3, 5-7. The match ran for two hours. This match proved to be the final match of her career as she had announced beforehand the Australian Open to be her final tournament.

Serena Williams defeated in third round

Former World number 1 and winner of 23 Grand Slams was shown the exit door in the third round of the Australian Open 2020. 28 year old Wang Qiang of China defeated Williams in three tight sets.

In the men’s singles category, Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the third round. In addition to Djokovic, Milos Raonic of Canada has also managed to enter the fourth round. Raonic defeated the young Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

100 Match wins for Roger Federer

Roger Federer narrowly avoided to become the latest victim on the day of upsets. He was stretched to 5 sets in a match that lasted over four hours against Australian John Millman. The match which ended past midnight saw the third seed win in a first super tie-break played at the Rod Laver Arena. In the best of 10 point tie-break the Swiss star reeled off 6 points in a row after being 4-8 down to win the match. With the win Federer became the first player to win 100 matches at the Australian Open. Last year, he became the first man to win 100 matches at Wimbledon. The 38 year old is hoping for a 6th crown down under having last won it in 2017.
