Whatsapp rolls out new feature to curb spreading of fake news

The popular instant messaging app Whatsapp is becoming the biggest medium of Fake News and rumors. To curb bogus reports, WhatsApp is testing a new feature on its platform, which will set a limit for forwarding all the messages, videos and photos that are shared on WhatsApp.
Whatsapp disclosed in a blog post that it is launching a feature soon for Indian users, after which the video or message can be forwarded in a limited number and limited group. Also the company will remove  message forwarding button. This means that if a message has been forwarded from the same account five times, then after the limit cross, the option to forward that message to WhatsApp will be disabled. There are more than a billion users worldwide, Facebook’s proprietary company Whatsapp, out of which more than 200 million are in India alone.

Government had issued a warning to WhatsApp

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad warned WhatsApp that it should just make promisies but also implement them. After the news of continuous fake news being spread, Whatsapp gave a message to the government about the steps taken to prevent fraudulent reports. However, the company made it clear that when everyone works together only then will they be able to stop spread of fake news.

The company had said in its reply that it is concerned about the growing incidents of violence spreading through rumors itself, as well as taking immediate action on such issues.
