World number 1 Simona Halep knocked out of US Open 2018

World Number 1 Simona Halep became the first top seed to fall in the first round of the US Open. The Romanian was knocked out in straight sets by Kaia Kanepi making it theĀ  first time in the Open era that the top-seeded woman has lost in the first round at the U.S. Open. The World number 44 Kaia kanepi hit 26 winners enroute to a 62 64 victory. This was Kaia Kanepi’s first win over a top-20 player since Madrid 2015. This is Halep’s second straight loss in the opening round in New York. Halep staged a comeback after being double break down to level at 4 games all in the second set but the Estonian broke again before Halep sent a forehand long on match point.

Big 4 reunite at the US Open

With Andy Murray fit to play again, the US Open 2018 is the first time in over a year since Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray aka the ‘Big Four’ of tennis are playing in a Grand Slam. While Federer and Nadal seemed to have turned back the clock winning 3 Grand Slams a piece since beginning of 2017. Djokovic who seemed to be on the decline suddenly seemed to have found his rhythm back winning this years Wimbledon and claiming a Cincinnati Masters 1000 title to complete all 9 masters 1000 title triumphs. Djokovic is the title favorite followed by defending champion Nadal at this years Flushing Meadows.
