6.7 magnitude earthquake rattles Japan; millions left without power

Earthquake tremors were felt on Thursday causing massive landslide in Hokkaido Island of Japan. As a result of the landslide incident, power supply in about 30 lakh houses and generator at a nuclear plant was stalled.

6.7-magnified intensity on the Richter scale

Japan Meteorological Agency said that earthquake tremors of 6.7-magnitude were felt on the Hokkaido island on Thursday at three o’clock in the morning. The center of the earthquake was in the city of Tomakomai in a depth of 40 kilometers. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake intensity was 6.7, however, this trigger tsunami warning.

News of missing people

Fire and Disaster Management Agency told that a person was found unconscious in Tomakomai and many people were reported missing from nearby city Atma. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told in a press conference that officials have recieved phone calls regarding road accidents and collapse of roads. They said that the officials are doing their best to rescue and the damage is being assessed.
