Allahabad renamed to Prayagraj after 444 years

Allahabad’s name has been re-named after 444 years. UP cabinet today (Tuesday) stamped the verdict. Earlier, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced this on Saturday. In fact, the city was named Prayagraj only in the Puranas. It was made in Allahabad during Akbar’s reign.

Given the mythological and religious significance, there was a demand for Allahabad to be renamed Prayagraj for years. But no serious consideration was made on this. When the Yogi government came in Uttar Pradesh in March 2017, they also promised that they would remame Allahabad to Prayagraj. After this many saints reminded him of his promise. In Allahabad, the Chief Minister started practicing this announcement.

Mythological significance: The city is called Prayagraj in Ramcharit Manas. Allahabad. The water of confluence was anointing kings in ancient times. This point is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana. While going to the forest, Shri Ram went to Bharadwaj’s ashram in Prayag. When Lord Shriram came to Shringverpur, there was mention of Prayagraj. From the 102 chapters to the 107th chapter of the most ancient and authentic Purana Matsya, the significance of this shrine is described. It says that Prayag is the region of Prajapati where the Ganga and Yamuna flows.

When was the name changed from Prayagraj to Allahabad

From Akbar Nama and Iyene Akbari and other Mughal historical books, it is known that Akbar laid the foundations of the fort in Prayagraj around 1574. He built a new town here, which he named Allahabad. Until then it was known as Prayagraj.
