Justice Ranjan Gogoi takes oath as new Chief Justice of India
Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjan Gogoi took charge as Chief Justice of the country. President Ramnath Kovind administered oath of office in Rashtrapati Bhavan. After this, he will hear cases alongwith Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M. Joseph in the Supreme Court. Justice Gogoi is the first Chief Justice from North-Eastern India to reach this position. Justice Gogoi is the 46th Chief Justice of the country and he will have tenure till 17 November 2019.
– Born on November 18, 1954, son of former Chief Minister of Assam, Keshav Chandra Gogoi, Justice Ranjan Gogoi earned his schooling from the Don Bosco School of Dibrughad and studied history from St. Stephens College, University of Delhi.
– Justice Ranjan Gogoi had registered for advocacy in 1978. He advocated for constitutional, taxation and corporate affairs in the Guwahati High Court.
– On February 28, 2001, Ranjan Gogoi was appointed a permanent judge of the Guwahati High Court.
– On September 9, 2010, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
– He was appointed Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011.
– He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.
– He has made significant decisions on various topics including the appointment of Lokpal, the appointment of the Lokpal in Assam, the constitution of Special Courts for hearing criminal cases against MPs and MLAs, reduction of life sentence for the convicts of Rajiv Gandhi assassination.
