NIT Srinagar students leave campus in mass protest

Over 500 students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), left the institution on Tuesday, as mass protest. They announced to return only after a permanent campus and a strong security arrangement. Students have also informed the Governor and Chief Minister of Uttarakhand along with the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Human Resource Minister, along with the order of mail, fax and other means. NIT management says that the Human Resources Ministry has been informed about the matter.

The students of various courses studying in the institute were boycotting classes from 19 days for the demand to start construction of permanent premises and then shift the temporary premises elsewhere. On Tuesday morning, they all went to their homes by locking their rooms in the hostel. The students are displeased that the Center and the state government are not considering their demands. That’s why they have to take this step.
Students have mentioned in the letter sent to the President, the Prime Minister, the Union Human Resource Development Minister, the Governor and the Chief Minister that they have taken this decision after a group discussion. Now they will return to the institute only when action on their demands will begin.

However, NIT registrar Colonel Sukhpal Singh says director Dr. Shyam Lal Soni has conveyed to senior officials of the Ministry of Human Resource of the development. The classes of NIT running in two premises are being operated in two campuses. Laboratory and administrative buildings have been built on old ITI land, while the classes are being operated in polytechnic building at 200 meters from there. For the hostel, the Institute has rented hotels at some distance from here.

Students feel cheated by this arrangement. They say that they all should be in the same campus. Children are also concerned about security in the current system. At the beginning of this month, two students were injured in the vehicle and seriously injured when going from one campus to another. One of them is currently undergoing treatment.
