Locals evacuate as Indonesia’s mount Merapi volcano erupts

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano erupted overnight on Wednesday. This led to a layer of ashes to spread in the surrounding villages and towns.

The news agency AP reported that around 250 residents were forced to evacuate. No casualties have been reported as of now. Mount Merapi is considered the most active volcano in Indonesia. This 2,968 meter high volcano is on the densely populated Java island near the ancient city of Yogyakarta. It has been erupting continuously since 1548. It is the smallest group of volcanoes in southern Java located in a subduction zone of the Indo-Australian Plate and the Sunda Plate.
